The charming medieval town of San Gimignano, besides the place of production of the famous Vernaccia wine, has a favorable soil to the cultivation of saffron (Crocus Sativus): it is an autumn plant with wonderful lilac colored flowers, but not easy at all to see, since its blooming, from mid October, lasts no more than 20 days...
The stigmas of pure saffron extracted from the plants can be tasted at lunch or dinner in delicious dishes that enhance its flavor, while the producer tells you about this cultivation, from harvesting to the processing of stigmas.
Since you are in San Gimignano, you can’t miss then to visit a winery producing Vernaccia wine, where you can learn the use of old and rare objects next to modern methods of wine making; the wine sampling, accompanied by tasting of local cheese and cold cuts, takes place in a room of the farm set up as Museum of rural art and tradition.
